Designs Using Adobe Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Photoshop/Flash/Illustrator/Indesign/Soundbooth/Premiere, Audacity

The artifacts presented below are designed for instructional purposes and represent a cross section of work for various age groups, ability groups, ethnicities, physical settings, computing equipment, Internet connection speeds, and learning modalities. While there are many other considerations evident in the designs the afore mentioned represent the most salient. If you are interested in using any of the artifacts presented or having any developed for you, your business or school please contact me.

Interactive Map of Australia

This is an interactive map which shows the physical outline of Australia's states and territories. The map is meant to introduce learners with some prior knowledge of the region to the major demarkations of the country.

The contour was created using 1pt lines. The lines were also used to outline and clearly distinguish the different colors identifying the various "regions". Using the lines in this manner was necessary as a design element because the colors selected were subtle and lacking deep contrast.

These indistinct tones were used to reduce the initial cognitive effort of the learner when interacting with the map. The need for variations in tones is necessary to initially engage the learner when limited or no instructions are provided and for learners with limited language proficiency. Additionally, the tones serve to provide a strong contrast to the more distinct colors used for the "mouse over" effect.

White sans-serif font was used to identify each of the divisions. This also provides additional contrast against the mouse-over background necessary to account for the visually impaired, who may not have been able to easily distinguish between the initial, less distinct tones.

Writing Numbers

The animation is a demonstration of writing the digit 2. The primary function is supplementing "pen and paper" activities aimed at developing fine motor skills. Guiding young students, specials needs learners, those affected by head trauma and learners challenged by physical limitations with their upper appendages can benefit from this type of visual.

The visual may also be used as an advance organizer for lessons in numeracy. However, the need for young learners to have support in a face-to-face environment is acknowledged.

Considerations should be given to providing user controls for the visual because of its repetitive nature. The need for variations in the size and speed of the animation should also be assessed based on the learner. Psychological and psychosomatic effects of viewing the "incomplete hand" especially for accident victims should remain a cautionary note.

The Clock Design

Used as a visual for identifying numerals and sequencing numbers the rotating arm of the display moves at a constant rate through each revolution. Therefore, the design may also be used to help students learn to tell time.

The colors are relatively subdued with the exception of the numerals which appear in sequence from 0 to 12.

The choice of using an annimated Gif was due in part to the unreliability and inconsistency of the target group's Internet browsers being able to play "Flash."

The entire "clock design" was done using Adobe Fireworks.

Creating and E-Book Using online Tools

The presentation captures the creation of an e-book using various online tools in a step by step process. The presentation (observable to the right) is done using Prezi an online tool with which users are able to incorporate images, videos, audio, and other presentation objects.

In this particular presentation I have automated the process while incorporating instances for learner interaction. Learners are able to start and control the speed of the presentation by clicking the play button to move through each step highlighting the development of the e-book.

The Prezi presentation is a guide and reference for the learners. The target group is novice teachers. The teachers are exposed to sites and multimedia skills meant for them to develop their own lessons.

The sample lesson demonstrated in this presentation is a writing exercise. The presentation which is also also narrated in Adobe Connect is presented as a saved stream.

Kindergarten Math Workbook-Counting Numbers 0 to 5

This workbook is the first in a series of 10 workbooks. Learners are introduced to counting numbers from 0 – 5. The series corresponds to the websitelearn.com pre-kindergarten to kindergarten math goal of learners being proficient with up to 80% accuracy identifying and counting numbers from 0 to 100.

The objectives in this volume are to identify numerals, associate a value with the numerals, write, identify and sequence numbers from 0 to 5. Coloring, matching, and tracing are some of the skills used to improve numerical awareness up to 5 and to develop fine motor skills.

The focus of this book is to compliment online, tutoring and classroom instruction in which novice learners are initially introduced to numeracy. Books in this series provide learners with additional resources to improve numeracy skills. The format of the book includes a sample at the top of each page followed by up to 5 practice items. The approach provides multiple levels of scaffolding for the target group. I have chosen to include some items commonly known as "dittos" not out of ignorance for their misuse but rather because of what I consider an important need. It is also important to acknowledge my understanding of the inconclusiveness making associations beween quatities above 4 and symbols for some learners within this age range.

The artwork is original with the careful use of bright tones to address cognitive overload. Sample pages of the publication are provided in PDF format. (Click the image to the right).

Introduction Video

This short video was intented to introduce Rohan Webb, ITAL Education and some of the services being offered to a wider audience using Youtube. The video was not intended to show the scope of my expertise. Instead, the intent was to introduce the viewer to opportunities to improve their learning environment by introducing or improving technology integration.

I used Adobe Premiere to create the presentation and upload it to my Youtube channel. Thereafter I created a link to it from an image.

Online Educational Systems

Online course samples and Learning Management Systems: Demonstration of proficiency using online delivery systems to highlight an understanding of instructional, andragogical, design principles, and learning theories. I also introduce the ITAL Education platform used by sites such websitelearn.com and italeducation.net. I developed the system to address glaring shortfalls in traditional "management" approaches to online educational environments.

ITAL Edtech 100 sec 01- Introduction to Online Education

The course is designed to assist a group of school teachers in Newark, New Jersey develop a conceptual framework for online education. The 5 week course provides an overview of some basic components of online teaching and learning. The course is aimed at professionals at the elementary school level who are ambivalent, ill informed and curious about online pedagogy.

The lesson, in addition to aiding educators in defining aspects of online education, introduces the learner to various types of video presentations, and the need to use lecture sparingly. Learners are also encouraged to take opportunities to further engage in online education.

ITAL Edtech 100 also demonstrates that LMS's (Learning Management Systems) can be very rudimentary. The course therefore tacitly encourages the learner to focus on the instructional design as the primary motivator and effective learning "tool" in a given online educational environment.
